Knot magic is considered one of the oldest forms of magic. The Witch’s Ladder is deeply rooted in folk magic dating back centuries. Hand knotted cords or hair were used as spells, often times with charms woven into the ladder with specific magical intentions.
My Witch's Ladders carry this history into the present through the body and the hands. Each piece is handwoven at a monumental scale — eleven feet long, twenty inches wide — using cotton and horse tail, materials that hold memory differently than fiber alone. The horse tail introduces something animal, something alive. Where the traditional ladder was a hidden object, secreted under mattresses or inside walls, mine are made to be seen — to hang, to move, to occupy a room the way a presence does.
These works live at the intersection of textile tradition, feminist folk history, and the enduring human impulse to bind meaning into material.
